Buffalo Creek

History/Purpose

The First Annual Buffalo Creek Triathlon was held on June 19, 2004, at Wellington Lake. Over 135 triathletes competed in this off-road triathlon, and together with the 35 short course beginner triathletes and the youth, over 170 triathletes competed that day. On June 18, 2005, the Second Annual Buffalo Creek Triathlons hosted over 235 athletes, and on June 10, 2006, the Third Annual Buffalo Creek Triathlons hosted over 325 athletes. On June 16, 2007, the event sold out with over 400 athletes competing.  And then on June 21, 2008, the event sold out with 500 athletes, making it one of the largest XTERRA races in the World.  With the gracious hospitality from the Castle Mountain Resort (owners of Wellington Lake) and with permit from the U.S. Forest Service, South Platte Ranger District, the Sixth Annual Buffalo Creek Triathlons will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009.  This year the US Forest Service has granted Buffalo Creek permission to allow 550 athletes to compete.

The Sixth Annual XTERRA Buffalo Creek has again been selected as an XTERRA American Tour race. With 5 other XTERRA triathlons for 2009 in the Rocky Mountains (The XTERRA Deuces Wild in Arizona on May 31; The XTERRA Four Corners in New Mexico on June 6; The XTERRA Mountain Cup in Beaver Creek on July 18; The XTERRA Wild Horse Creek in Montana on July 19; and The XTERRA Indian Peaks at Eldora Ski Resort just west of Boulder, Colorado on August 1, www.digdeepsports.com;) triathletes can win points based on their finish in their age group. Those triathletes with the most points in their best 4 races in their age group can qualify to compete at the XTERRA U.S.A. Championship in Ogden, Utah on September 27, and then qualify to compete in the XTERRA World Championship in Maui on October 25. For further details on the Point Series and how you can qualify to compete in the U.S.A. and World Championships, please refer to: www.Xterraplanet.com

The Buffalo Creek Triathlon has 3 purposes:
1. To provide an opportunity for local triathletes to compete in an off-road triathlon near the Denver metro area.
2. To raise funds for some special charities:

Wilderness On Wheels. Off-Road Triathletes appreciate the opportunities of Colorado’s outdoors, and it seems appropriate to me that we support an organization that provides outdoor experiences to other Coloradans confined to wheelchairs.   www.wildernessonwheels.org
